Facebook’s Facial Recognition Software, How It Affects You!!!
Back in June 2011, Facebook started using facial recognition software that makes it easier to “tag” photos. Wait… make tagging photos easier? Yes, the goal of the company was to make photo tagging more of an automated function, where a user simply uploads the photo, and Facebook’s software will “suggest” a name for that person. Did you know they were doing this? I just read about it today. What does this mean to our privacy? It means our faces are now in a database at Facebook, and we all know the perils of Facebook privacy! Think about this, if your picture is taken by accident at a concert, and uploaded to Facebook, will that user be able to see who you are? Will your name show up as a suggested tag? I don’t know the answer.
Is Facebook able to sale the information within the facial recognition database to advertisers? Now the advertisers will know what town you live in and what your face looks like. This will make it possible for the advertising agency to tailor ads for you. Don’t believe me? Google “advertisement using facial recognition.” Advertisers are already using facial scanning software to scan your face to create a demographic based ad for the person standing in front of digital advertisement. Some of these ads even allow the ad agency to watch you as you watch the advertisement…
Folks, I want you to question these types of items because it is your privacy at stake here. “Isn’t this harmless, I mean it is just advertisements,” but is it really stopping there? I prefer my privacy, I don’t know about your thoughts or feelings about this!
